Men over the age of 50 are more prone to getting prostate cancer. Statistics show that around 300,000 new cases of prostate are diagnosed every year, with a shocking 35,000 of men dying from the disease every year. If recent statistics are anything to go by, then there is need to get worried if you are approaching the age of 50, or are already there. The prostate can be affected in three different ways — infection, cancer, or/and enlargement.

Symptoms of an affected prostate

- An infected prostate, medically referred to as prostitis, is characterized by lots of pain, urinary complications, and fever. While there is treatment for prostitis, it is recommended to follow a healthy dietary regime.

- Enlargement, medically referred to as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BHP), this is a non-cancerous enlargement of this body organ and is characterized by trickling of urine before and after urination, hesitancy in urination, frequent urination, urgency of urination, and difficulty to start the urination stream.

- Prostate cancer is characterized by the same symptoms as of BHP; no wonder most men are always unaware of their cancerous state. As such, it is recommended that a PSA test to be done after every 6 months for men above the age of 45.

To be able to take care of your prostate and ensure it remains as healthy as ever, it is advisable you include the following in your dietary plan.

- Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes (beans, peas, and lentils), fresh fish preferably fish from cold ocean waters (sardines, salmon, cod, and mackerel) as they are known to contain significant amounts of essential fatty acids.

- You should also eat whole grains and avoid refined products such as pasta, breads, rice, crackers etc.

- There are also some herbs and food additives that have proven very effective on the prostate. These are:-

Saw palmetto – a herb that has been tested and proven to shrink enlarged prostates and reduces PSA.

Green tea has some catechins in it that works wonders on the prostate. However, it is yet to be known exactly how green tea prevents or fight cancer, but all the same, it is healthy for you so you should have it in your diet

Nettle – very rich in Iron and Vitamin C, alongside nutrients that strengthen the prostate

Pygeum – this herb has been used since time immemorial to treat urinary tract infections and diseases of the prostate

Foods to avoid :

Fatty meats, excessive salts, cookies, donuts, potato chips, hydrogenated oils, packaged, canned, or over-processed foods, alcohol, sodas, black teas, coffee, and pasteurized dairy products.

The prostate is a male body organ in the reproductive system that assumes the shape and size of a walnut. The prostate is located in the front of the rectum surrounding the urethra. Its main function is to produce a fluid that facilitates transportation of sperms during ejaculation. The prostate however is prone to infections and diseases, the most common ones being Prostatitis, Prostate Cancer, and Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Some of the common symptoms of an unhealthy prostate include:

- Weak urinary stream

- Frequent urination

- Difficulty establishing urination

- Decreased libido that eventually leads to sexual dysfunction

- Pain during urination or during sexual intercourse

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

This is the most common of all prostate conditions in men, and is characterized by an enlarged prostate. Note that BPH is a non-cancerous (benign) enlargement. The condition is more rampant in older men because as they age, the prostate enlarges naturally. Be advised that BPH doesn’t lead to Prostate cancer, but one can have both benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and Prostate Cancer at the same time.

Prostatitis

This is a non-contagious inflammation of the prostate, an inexplicable ailment that urologists are yet to understand its cause fully. However, there is evidence to believe that it is caused by bacteria, the same one that causes Urinary Tract Infections. Even so, it should be noted that some patients lack the evidence of the presence of the mentioned bacteria in their prostates. This is probably because it is believed to contain the same microorganisms as those found in Urea plasma or Chlamydia, hence the difficulty in identifying the standard cultivation techniques. Thus it is difficult to diagnose and treat.

Prostate cancer

This is a very malignant tumor that will normally start at the outer parts of the male prostate. As time goes by and the tumor continues to grow, it extends to the inside parts of the prostate.

With that being said, the surest way to detect prostate conditions in men is to go for a test if you are at high predispose risk say if you have a history of prostate cancer in your lineage. The test for prostate conditions could either be a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) or a Prostate Special Antigen Test. A high PSA could be an indication of great odds of contracting prostate cancer but this does not necessarily mean the cancer is present.

The prostate is a small gland found in men that resembles the shape of a walnut. The function of the gland is to secrete fluid used to transport sperm and it includes some smooth muscle in order for that fluid to be expelled. Prostate biopsys may result when problems arise concerning this gland and other testing cannot dispel the possibility of cancer.

This gland is located right below the bladder and surrounds the urethra and can be easily felt during a rectal examination. Inside the prostate, the prostatic urethra is one that comes from the bladder and then combines with two ducts used for ejaculatory purposes. Conditions associated with this gland are usually referred to a urologist for testing and treatment.

When particular problems arise with the prostate, the urologist will perform a series of tests to pinpoint specific causes. A variety of disorders can be responsible for uncomfortable symptoms regarding this gland. Prostasis and benign prostatic hyperplasia are conditions that can result in the need to visit a urologist aside from cancer.

Prostasis causes inflammation and there are four separate types of prostasis; each with a different cause. Bacterial types are acute and chronic forms; generally treated with antibiotics. Non-bacterial types are often treated with alpha blockers. One particular form known as leucocytosis can cause inflammation and an elevated white cell count which may or may not result in fever.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is most commonly found in older men and most commonly presents with difficulty in urinating. Symptoms can range from needing to urinate frequently to the inability to urinate at all. Medication is usually the first source for treatment and in some cases there are several procedures that are minimally invasive that can be done before surgery becomes necessary.

Whenever a patient reports to the urologist with an enlarged prostrate or difficulty in urinating there are a series of test that are normally performed to diagnose the problem. A prostate-specific antigen test (PSA) blood test and rectal examine (DRE) are commonly done under these circumstances. If the results of these tests indicate a possibility of cancer then a biopsy is the next course of testing.

During the procedure, approximately a dozen small tissue samples are removed from the gland to be tested under a microscope for abnormalities. PSA tests are designed to indicate levels that are consistent with cancer and this procedure is a way to confirm or deny initial testing and examination. It can be done on an out-patient basis with only a local anesthetic. Some men have reported small amounts of blood in the urine for several days following the procedure.

The procedure can be performed through the rectum, urethra or perineum (rarely). The samples are taken with the use of a very thin spring-loaded tissue collection needle and they are generally guided with the use of ultrasound. There is a certain degree of discomfort associated with the procedure. In most cases of prostate biopsys an antibiotic may be prescribed as a precaution for the prevention of infection after the procedure.

All men who are over fifty will at one time or another begin to experience some problems with their prostate. Today the prostate health is receiving more attention due to the fact that there is a large number of men who are concerned about prostate cancer, which is one of the leading killers of men. You can take better care of this matter with a good sound and healthy diet for maintaining good prostate health.

There is still a lot of debate over the causes of prostate cancer and its enlargement that some men get and many others do not. However, there is some evidence that living off of a good diet will benefit a huge number of these men who suffer with prostate problems. The enlargement of the prostate is associated with several frustrating symptoms such as an increase with urination, waking up at night more than usual to urinate, inability to empty the bladder and also some sexual dysfunctions.

It is known that not all enlarged prostates lead to getting cancer. However, once the it has become enlarged it is very important to keep watch on how the gland operates. Diets and genetics do play a big role with the out come of the health of the prostate. A poor diet with regard to anti-oxidants will lead to some development of cancer in the prostate.

With the way people are living today with a competitive and quick paced life style, one big thing that most men seem to forget or ignore is their own diet. In many cases because people today are always in a rush they seem to grab the first thing they can to eat, such as fast foods.

Many men may not even think about just how unhealthy these diets can be for them as it contributes to the enlargement of their prostate and eventually to cancer as well as other medical problems.

You can use dietary supplements which seem to help a great deal and are very convenient way to limit the risk of problems to the prostate. There are many herbs that can help to boost the health of your prostate. A big change can make all the difference and can prove to be a good solution which can ensure that a mans prostate can remain in a good healthy condition.

There are vitamins like vitamin E and also selenium that are considered to be very powerful dietary supplements. Almonds, Brazil nuts and Hazelnuts are considered to be a great source for keeping a prostate in good health. Selenium is one very potent anti-oxidant which can also boost a mans immune system. It will increase the defense for the body and can help to fight against cancer cells.

The oil that is obtained from wheat germ, sunflower, olives and soybeans are some other natural foods that are very enriched with vitamin E. There were many studies that do show eating an enriched diet with vitamin E will surely help to prevent prostate cancer in men. Also it is known that selenium and vitamin E combined will really reduce all incidences of prostate cancer.

A prostate ultrasound is a test, done under clinical conditions, which is often used to locate issues with the prostate gland in men. Using high frequency sound waves, which pass through the body of the patient, these reflect back and produce an outline of the area being scanned.

By producing an image of the prostate, health care professionals can use the results to help determine whether there any issues that need further investigation and treatment. With several conditions affecting the gland, such as enlargement and infection, it is an important tool in modern treatment methods.

Prostate cancer is also very common in men, though many do not realize they have the condition as they have no symptoms. Increasingly, a prostate ultrasound is being used to determine if there are any cancerous cells present in men over the age of fifty or sixty.

A walnut shaped gland found only in men, the prostate is a fundamental part of a man’s sexual reproductive system. It is key to producing semen, through its production of a thick, white fluid which liquefies and mixes with the sperm released in the testicles, which forms the ejaculate.

As men age, the prostate naturally gets larger. Located between the bladder and the penis and surrounding the urethra however, this can cause complications in some cases. Treatment is usually successful, though this often not needed at all.

Prostate ultrasound is an unpleasant, but rarely painful procedure. It is known as a transrectal procedure, involving the placing of a cylindrical probe in the rectum. The patient lies on his side, with his knees bent, and the probe is gently inserted. Over a period of up to thirty minutes, the probe is delicately moved back and forth in order an image can be gained of the entire gland.

Before the examination, an enema will most likely be necessary, and the patient will be advised not to urinate for an hour before the scheduled start time. It is worrying about the procedure that causes most anxiety for patients, as the exam itself and events after often prove far less of an issue than expected.

After the prostate ultrasound, there is likely to be some discomfort experienced for a while. However, most patients will be able to go home straight after. A patient can expect a small amount of mucus and possibly a little bleeding from the rectum for up to two days after the exam.

In some rare cases, there can also be a small amount of blood in the semen or urine, but this should not be worried about unless it continues over an extended period of time. There are few instances of infection in such an exam and, on most cases, these will come from the biopsy which often accompanies such a test, and are readily treated by orally taken antibiotics.

Once the prostate ultrasound has been completed, the examining professional, a radiologist or urologist, will be able to determine the results very quickly. From here, if necessary, treatment can be discussed and started almost immediately and certainly within a seventy-two hour period.

There are quite a lot of men who will start to suffer from having an enlarged prostate gland after the age of forty. When most men pass into the middle ages it becomes very common for them to experience some symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland. Should this be left untreated it can create some bad consequences. Benign prostate hyperplasia is the medical term for this condition. However, there are some natural ways for enlarged prostate treatment that can work well.

The problem men get from this condition is very common and they will include problems when urinating. A man will have difficulty with the flow of urine or he may have frequent urination and most of the time it will happen during the night with many trips to the bathroom, or even a very weak and intermittent flow of the urine.

The man may even experience some pain or even some burning sensation and in some cases there is even some traces if blood in the urine. Sometimes if this is not treated there may even be the inability to urinate too.

There is also another problem with having this enlarged gland and that is maintaining an erection which is very common with this condition too. Today there is such a large number of commercials which are advertising on the market many pills that are intended to sustain an erection for men. But it is very advisable to first visit a doctor before ever purchasing any products that claim to help with this problem.

Most of the symptoms for this medical condition will vary from being inconvenient to being extremely painful and sometimes even it can be critical too. The causes in regard to this condition are still not too clear even though it is believed that an enlarged prostate gland is due to an imbalanced hormone or even to having a poor diet too. So it is so great and beneficial to be able to hear about some natural ways to help treat this problem for men.

There are plenty of studies being done today that have discovered that selenium is very essential for the prevention of many diseases, which does include the enlargement of this gland. This may help too with the reduction of the prostate gland as well. It has also been found that selenium if very often missing from the soil and crops and this is especially true with organic crops.

One good way to get some selenium is by consuming Brazil nuts. These nuts have been found to have about ten times the amount of selenium than any other source.

Another natural thing that you can eat are pumpkin seeds which is also a great source for selenium. There are so many personal and good medical studies being done today for treatments that it is a good idea to listen to those who may have some natural ways to treat this problem. The advice for this is mostly trying to eat natural foods that are known to help with the enlargement of the prostate gland.

Found only in men, the prostate is a small gland located in the pelvis. Sitting between the penis and the bladder, it surrounds the tube which carries urine from the bladder to the penis; the urethra. Prostate enlargement commonly affects men, particularly through aging, and it is estimated that up to sixty percent of all men over the age of sixty will suffer from the condition. There are several easy to spot enlarged prostate symptoms.

Though its cause is unknown, there is widespread throughout male health care professionals that link the condition with aging, and in particular changes in hormone levels connected with the process.

Enlarged prostate symptoms tend to surround problems with urination, and are often covered off in one general term; Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms, or LUTS for short. Caused by the enlarged gland putting pressure on both the bladder and the urethra, there are a number of individual LUTS to look out for, which can be quite similar.

A difficulty with starting to urinate is commonly an issue, as is having a urine flow which is intermittent. An intermittent flow, having to constantly stop and start, is also often linked with another symptom, where the sufferer has a constant need to strain, or push their bladder from within to pass urine.

Having a constant, or frequent, necessity to urinate is also a common sign of an enlarged prostate. Sufferers in this regard will also most likely wake up through the night with a desperate urge to urinate and, in many cases, this in turn will lead to incontinence. Incontinence through the day is also commonly one of the enlarged prostate symptoms.

In almost all of the above, there may also be a feeling that the bladder has not been emptied fully which, in most instances, will in fact be the case. Other symptoms which should urge the seeking of immediate medical advice include severe pain when urinating, and the appearance of blood droplets in the urine.

Whilst severe pain and blood should be treated immediately, it is highly recommended that any of the above enlarged prostate symptoms be investigated as soon as possible. Even if they are mild instances, it is likely that there will be an underlying condition that a physician or health care professional should be made aware of.

Though naturally worrying, enlargement of the prostate is very rarely a serious condition which will require ongoing treatment. However, whilst this is true, any instances of worry should always be investigated.

This is because that sometimes the condition and associated background to it can prove troublesome, and can go on to affect the quality of life severely. However, though it is natural to worry that the condition will lead to, or increase the risk of, prostate cancer, this is not the case in significant numbers.

Enlargement of the prostate can be treated through medication or if serious enough surgery. In all cases, a physician is best placed to advise the best course of action. However, it is likely no medical intervention will be required as the condition will be self correcting, or treatable through small lifestyle changes.

A prostate gland is a very important part of the male body. It is part of a mans reproductive system and its function is to secrete an alkaline type fluid that can constitute about ten to thirty percent of a mans seminal fluid. Along with spermatozoa, the fluid is the main contents of semen. A mans prostate gland is located below the urinary bladder and it is surrounded by the urethra. The prostate massage and milking can be very advantageous to many men.

A prostate massage, which is also known as milking, is widely used for medical reasons and also some clinical purposes. This process is commonly used to help reduce any and all pressure that is on the prostate gland by milking it. The process is more widely known as prostate milking. This procedure is mostly used as medical treatment to help prevent chronic benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Like with so many other medical treatments, there is always some risk to take, as there is with the process of prostate massaging. So these procedures should always be carried out within the proper manner. An example would be, a vigorous massage of this gland in some cases for many men that are suffering from problems with their prostate gland, will have the risk of getting a certain type of gangrene, known as local cellulite. Also sometimes this massaging can create septicaemia, which is known as a kind of blood poisoning and in some cases causes prostate cancer to spread to other parts of the body.

However, this type of treatment was found to be very useful in the draining out of any and all sequestered secretions in prostates that have become inflamed. Also with a gentle massage of the gland is known to really relieve hemorrhoids along with fissures that are sometimes found in your prostate. An Inappropriate massage of this gland can create the pushing back of the normal urethra flora right into the epididymis and also the epididymitis.

There should also be very proper care taken into consideration whenever doing the process of milking the prostate, if not and it is done incorrectly, this can and will certainly cause some damage to the sensitive nerves and the tissues that reside right on the head of a mans prostate gland. Here is how to massage and milk the prostate.

First you want to be sure that your bladder in empty as well as your bowls too. Be sure to also maintain good hygiene before doing this process. An example would be to make sure that your finger tips and nails are very clean before beginning to massage. Then just cover your hand with the glove and use a lubricant. Then get yourself into a position that is comfortable.

Then as gently as you can, insert one finger right into your rectum until you reach the gland. The gland is about the size of walnut and you may just need to slowly and carefully move your finger around the walls of the rectum until you reach the gland.

After you have located the gland you can begin to gently massage the area on both sides. In a short while the gland will then be stimulated enough so to contract, which will then cause it to secrete some of the prostate fluid. The prostate massage is known to be very good for a mans health, but if you choose to do this yourself, it is recommended to first consult your doctor before you decide to do this on your own.

A walnut sized gland between the bladder and the penis, the prostate gland is something that all men have. It’s an important little thing, vital to the sex life, though a significant number of men do not know a great deal about it. As prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, this is something that health care professionals are keen to correct.

The primary function of the prostate gland is to help with the production of semen. By producing a thick white fluid, which is liquefied by PSA, (prostate-specific antigen), and mixes with the sperm from the testicles, semen is produced which is then ejaculated by the penis.

Though cancer of the prostate gland is the most common suffered by men, it is not the biggest killer; lung cancer retains this. However, there are other common conditions with the gland that men suffer from, most often associated with the normal ageing process.

Commonly, the prostate gland will enlarge as men get older, and in most instances, this will cause no issues whatsoever. However, in one third of men over fifty years of age, this will lead to medical conditions.

Due to its location, around the urethra and bladder, enlargement can cause pressure. This will inevitably lead to problems, and quite often pain, when urine is passed or trying to be passed.

A similar condition, though with very separate origin is prostatitis. In many cases, this is caused by nothing more than a simple infection, and is readily treated by common antibiotics.

All prostate problems are relatively easy to treat, when diagnosed early enough. Symptoms of suffering from any of the problems associated with the gland will center on urinary issues, often referred to as Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS)

LUTS to look out for include: a frequent need to urinate both and night and day; difficulty beginning or maintaining flow of urine; pelvic pain or discomfort; pain during sexual activities or ejaculation. Less experienced symptoms to be aware of include lower back pain, and blood appearing in the urine.

As with many health conditions, prostate gland issues effect certain groups more than others. In this regards, men of African or Afro-Caribbean descent are three times as likely to develop such problems as Caucasian men.

By nature, older men are also at a greater risk of developing problems. Indeed, a significant number of men of seventy or older are likely to have prostate cancer, though be unaware of this having suffered no symptoms.

Other high risk groups include those that have a diet which is high in red meat and saturated animal fats, and those that regularly exceed recommended daily limits of alcohol and caffeine. Reducing both of these food groups is thought to promote a healthier prostate gland, as is increasing daily amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Men are thought unlikely to approach their physician for an examination, whether they have experienced symptoms or not, due to embarrassment. Many men also neglect having a consultation through fear of being diagnosed with the condition. Readily treatable however, this is something professionals in the field are eager to reverse.

For many men who suffer from prostate cancer, surgery will offer a higher survival rate than any hormonal therapies or even external radiation. This news is from the new studies that were found by researchers. So it is highly recommended that prostate cancer surgery will be better for the sufferer than any other type of treatments.

One of the big differences that are among therapies is that there were more higher levels of risk for cancer and is suggested, according to many researchers, that in so many cases it would be a much more better idea to go with surgery for the many patients with this type of cancer, which is known to recur and even spread.

You can find the studies right online which is available from an online journal, Cancer, which is a journal from the American Cancer Society. Many of the reports on this matter that are comparing the out comes of these treatments that are among many different treatments are being looked at only as PSA responses to the treatments, instead of the more important long term out comes in regard to the survival rates.

The measurement of the levels of PSA or the prostate specific antigen, which is found in the blood, will be intended to help determine if whether the cancer will recur or spread. In so many other cases the rising of the level of PSA does not always mean that the cancer will begin to spread. The estimation is that one in every six men shall be diagnosed with having cancer in the prostate gland. This is known as the second cause of deaths among so many men today, which is according to the American Cancer Society.

The therapies that are being used are known to have some side effects, which makes it so important to understand which type of treatment will be the most effective to use for this problem. In the current practice it is likely that surgery will be a much more better option to take than going with some treatments where there will always be a risk of this type of cancer returning and or spreading.

The researchers are now finding out that the risk for the cancer mortality is now more than three times higher in most patients who did receive hormone therapy against the radical prostatectomy. This is when the prostate gland is removed. It is more than two times as high in most patients who did get the external beam radiation therapy versus the prostatectomy.

Now for the men who have the low level risk, the prostate cancer mortality is more uncommon and the differences that were among the treatments options were considered to be quite small. It is considered that the surgery is much more beneficial to men with prostate caner as there is less risk for all men with this medical condition.

Today it is quite clear to the community of physicians that prostatectomy is what should be considered by all men that have the higher risk type of prostate cancer. In so many situation surgery is the best known option.
